Friday morning, yes on a school day morning, when kids get a chance to feel like they’re getting away with something by missing school, and playing some hockey, the Flames came ready to play. The Flames got to be the home team in their first game of the 2nd Annual MLK Tournament, hosting the Conquistadors 01 team from the South Shore. The home team earned a 6-0 win and will play again at 4:30pm (West Side Arena) as the visiting team vs. the New England Jr. Hurricanes.
1st Period: The Flames took a few minutes to warm up and get some rhythm going, but were soon carrying the play. For more than half of the period the Flames controlled the puck, dominated the shots on goal, but were still tied 0-0. Then, on the power play, Sam Hebert scored on a play that was assisted by Sebastian Beal, and goaltender, Anders Lindberg (his second assist of the season). Two minutes later, Ryan Douthart redirected a shot in front that found the net to put the Flames on top 2-0. The Flames goal was the result of some crisp puck movement, with assists going to Sam and Wil Hebert. The period would end with the Flames leading 2-0, and outshooting their opponents 15-1.
2nd Period: The second period leveled out a little bit with the Flames scoring the only goal. They outshot South Shore 10-3 in the period but took two penalties and didn’t get as many scoring chances. The Flames goal was scored by Wil Hebert who had taken a pass from Ashlie Killen and fired the puck into the net. After two periods the Flames led 3-0.
3rd Period: In the third period the Flames scored three more times and gained a 10-2 shots advantage. Sam Hebert scored an unassisted, shorthanded goal to give the Flames a four goal lead. Sam’s second goal of the game was also his 50th goal of the season. Then Zachary Bayer scored from Sam Hebert on a nice play down low. The final Flames goal was scored by Sean Moore when his one-timer beat the goaltender after a nice centering pass from Brendan Courtney. The Flames outshot their opponent 35-6 for the game and earned a convincing tournament opening win.
