On Sunday afternoon the Flames Pee Wee Major team played their semi-final game in the “5-8 bracket” of the 2nd Annual MLK Tournament. The Flames, playing as the 6th seed, hosted the Conquistadors 01 team. The two teams had met earlier in the tournament, with the Flames earning a 6-0 win. This one would be similar in result as the Flames got stronger throughout the game and won 9-1. The win ensured that the Flames would play a fifth game in the tournament on Monday morning vs. a tough team from Keene in the final of the “5-8 bracket”.
1st Period: The first period was controlled by the Flames, but the scoreboard didn’t reflect as much. The Flames did finally get on the board when Ryan Douthart and Wil Hebert set up a goal scored by Sam Hebert. Also noteworthy in this game was the fact that goaltender Keenan Alnahas laced up his skates and took a regular shift out on the ice, leaving Anders Lindberg to tend the net. Alnahas didn’t register a point, but he did get some good looks, and just missed scoring a goal.
2nd Period: The Flames cranked out a little bit more offense in the second period, scoring three goals. Christian Levesque scored a nice goal which was set up by Ashlie Killen and Zachary Bayer. Then it was Sean Moore’s turn to score when Sam Hebert and Sebastian Beal set the table for the goal. Jackson Puzzo got into the act with an unassisted goal giving the Flames a 4-0 lead. The Conquistadors scored with under a minute left in the period to cut the lead to 4-1. And, with that goal, I thought it would be worth noting that conquistador is a Spanish word that means ‘conqueror’.
3rd Period: Having conquered the conquerors, the Flames imposed their will in the third period, scoring five more times, and coming close countless other times. Sam Hebert scored again, this time set up by Sebastian Beal. Then Beal beat the goaltender with a shot that trickled toward the open net when Patrick Goren gave the puck the push it needed to cross the goal line. The goal was Goren’s 10th of the season, giving the Flames six different players with 10 or more goals this season. Brendan Courtney scored next, and it was Sam Hebert and Sebastian Beal getting the helpers. Wil Hebert scored a goal from the left-wing after being set up by Kyle O’Flaherty and Jackson Puzzo. Zachary Bayer topped off the evening with an unassisted goal, and the final tally in a 9-1 win for the Flames.
On Tap: The Flames play the #5 seed Keene in the “5-8 bracket” Final at St. A’s. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 9:30 am.
