Day two. White Mountains National Forest. Hastings Campground.
We got up and took a ride through Gorham and up into Berlin. We grabbed some coffee and decided to make a loop up Route 16 through Errol and down Route 26 through Grafton Notch State Park back to base camp. What a trip this turned out to be. Of course, we stopped in Errol at L.L. Cote for a couple of treats for the twins. Then we hit Grafton Notch State Park and checked out Screw Auger Falls on the Bear River. After turning a small drive into a 4+ hour road trip, we got back to base camp. After some lunch cooked up on the fire, we hit the Wild River just a half-mile from our camp. What a jewel of a find! We swam. We played on the rocks. We skipped rocks. We just generally cooled off, and it was a blast! We got dinner cooked up just before the skies opened, and it poured for the entire night. So, to pass the time, we took a ride and the kids watched a movie in the van while I listened to the Red Sox on the radio. Once we had some cell signal, we called mom to complete the night. As I laid in the tent, well after dark, through the rain, I heard a pair of owls calling to each other up and down the valley.
