Goffstown scored a run in the first inning and that was all they really needed. Connor Hujsak and the Grizzlies defense held the Nashua North Titans off of the scoreboard, allowing only 6 total baserunners all afternoon. The Grizzlies finally won two games in a row for the first time this season, after a come from behind win against Salem yesterday, and a 6-0 shutout today at Holman Stadium in Nashua.
On the second pitch of the game, Connor Hujsak ripped a line shot double that bounced and hit the bricks on the left field wall. After two outs were made, Will Soucy lined a soft single to center field and Hujsak scored. After the Grizzlies went down 1-2-3 in the second inning they erupted in the 3rd inning.
Ben Dodge led off with a single to left field. Hujsak singled to left. Clay Campbell had a brilliant at-bat, staying back on a breaking ball and singling to left. Bob Doherty singled inside the left field line to knock in a run. Will Soucy hit a sacrifice fly to center field. Cam Kozak reached on an error by the 3rd baseman. Liam Kilbreth hit a sacrifice fly to right field on a sensational diving catch by Jimmy Reel for Nashua. TJ Dutton had an RBI single to right-center. Colin Burke had an RBI single to left. Ben Dodge reached on an error by the shortstop but nobody scored. That ended a streak of 10 straight batters who either reached base and/or knocked a run in. The Grizzlies led 6-0 after two and a half innings.
Trevor Kelly was the starting pitcher for the Titans and he allowed 6 runs (3 earned) in 3 innings of work. He would stay in the game and play second base, where he was outstanding. He also was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and hard line drive out. Varun Lindagal moved over from first base and worked 3 scoreless innings on the mound allowing 3 hits and a walk. Vincent Priore pitched the seventh for the Titans and he set the Grizzlies down in order. Jafet Rodriguez and Alex Meesig had the other hits for the Titans.
The game was played at a pretty good pace with only 3 total walks and plenty of good defense on both sides. Connor Hujsak, Bob Doherty, and Colin Burke each had a pair of hits in the game. Will Soucy knocked in 3 runs and stole a base. 8 different Grizzlies contributed base hits in the best game the team has played from top to bottom all season. Hujsak pitched a gem, a complete game, 4 hit shutout, with 8 strikeouts.
Goffstown is scheduled to host Trinity at 4:30 pm tomorrow afternoon over at Lion’s Field. With the win, the Grizzlies jump into the #13 spot in the D1 baseball standings. They are 5-3 in their last 8 games after an 0-3 start to the season. Goffstown has 4 more games scheduled next week.
