This hen stayed in her nesting box as I worked around the chicken pen and the chicken coop late this afternoon. She had gathered four different colored eggs beneath her, none of which were hers. She was content to chat with me quietly as I refilled the feed, cleaned the roosting branches, and turned over the bedding in the coop. Outside, I worked my way around the pen to water the chickens and make sure all things chicken, were in order. As I was back in the coop collecting eggs from the other nesting boxes she even raised herself up enough for me to grab the four eggs she was keeping warm. A few minutes later as I was getting ready to close up the pen, this red hen came to the coop door and directed a few chicken words toward me, as to say, “Hey, there’s one more egg in there.” She was right. She went her way, out into the pen, and I picked up the final egg of the day, a very warm one at that.
