From Tri-Town Arena, Hooksett, NH – Saturday, January 23, 2021
After an overtime affair just three nights earlier, it surprised nobody that Goffstown and Bishop Brady played another tight, one-goal game on Saturday night.
Goffstown held a lead until late in the second period before the Giants from Bishop Brady would score a power play goal, and then add a 4-on-4 goal in the third, to win it 2-1.
The Grizzlies got on the board first when Colby Wright pushed a short pass ahead to Jackson Burke who sped into the offensive zone and ripped a perfect shot past Owen Currier in goal. The goal came at 9:58 of the first period, and Goffstown took a 1-0 lead to the intermission.
Again, both goaltenders were stellar in net. On the night, Currier made 37 saves to 36 saves for James Amorelli in net for the Grizzlies. The Grizzlies hit the post and the crossbar with shots, but unfortunately, those don’t really count for anything.
Bishop Brady scored on the power play at 12:55 of the second period, they were 1-for-4 with the extra skater advantage on the night. After possessing the puck for some time in the offensive zone, Ben Mordarski worked the puck from behind the net out to the half wall, to Ben Marceau. Marceau played a little catch out top with Peyton Vachon before ripping a shot from the left wing circle for the tying goal.
The Grizzlies started the final period shorthanded and Brady was all over the offensive zone until Vachon was called for an obvious hooking penalty at the blue line. With the teams skating four to a side, Marceau made a Pavel Datsyuk-esque play when he lifted the stick of Brennan Pierce as he turned behind his own net and stole the puck. Then in one sweeping motion as he spun from the behind the net toward the front, and Amorelli came off of the nearside post, Marceau drilled a shot into the net for what would be the winning goal at 1:49 of the period.
Goffstown had several more chances to tie the game but could not get another puck behind Currier. In the back-to-back games, Owen Currier faced 81 Grizzlie shots and made 78 saves, for an astounding save percentage of .963. James Amorelli got the short end of the offense in his back-to-back games, posting a .936 save rate on 78 shots faced. The goaltending in both games was outstanding overall. Goffstown pulled Amorelli for the final few seconds of the game, but nothing came of it.
Goffstown hosts Trinity at St. A’s tonight at 745pm. Trinity comes into tonight’s action having lost to Bishop Guertin and Exeter thus far.
