I don’t know what happened over the four hours that elapsed between the Flames 9-1 loss in game two, and their 2-1 win in game three, but it was absolutely awesome to watch. The 2010 Flames were literally everywhere on the ice, shift after shift. The team’s energy was contagious and their play was inspiring.
Game 3 featured the Flames against the Gilmour (Ohio) Gladiators. The 2010 Flames took a 1-0 lead when Caleb Powers put a heavy shot on goal and the rebound came out to Gavin Petrie who put the puck into the back of the net. Gilmour tied the game at 1-1, late in the second period on a shot from the right wing circle. The Flames had speed and intensity going all game long. This combination led to five penalties called on Gilmour with all of them being penalties that impeded the Flames from skating away from their opponent. The fifth one paid off for the Flames when Sean McGee scored from Soucy after a face-off win. The shot came from the left wing and hit the Gilmour goaltender inside the left pad and slid through the five-hole for the game-winning goal.
I know that the Flames were playing a different team in game 3 than they were in game 2, but the energy, intensity, and total buy-in to a cause bigger than any of them individually was not only palpable, it was downright inspiring! Just four hours after a 9-1 drubbing, the Flames came back with a vengeance. The 14U Flames coming over to the boards to take up cheering and chanting for the younger Flames certainly added fuel to their fire. It was a lot of fun to watch. The win allowed the Flames to finish the round-robin play as the #2 seed. The 2010 Flames earned a rematch with Gilmour (#3 seed) in the second Semi-Final the next afternoon.
Flames scoring:
1) Petrie (1) from Powers (1).
2) McGee (1) from Soucy (2).
Travis Ingalls and Will Rosenbeck split time and were excellent in net for the Flames!
