Early on Saturday morning, before the snow starting falling, the 2010 Flames played host to the Northern Cyclones at West Side Arena for a GSL game. The Flames played well enough to skate out of West Side Arena with a 1-0 shutout victory.
Manchester scored in the first period to take a 1-0 lead and then made it stand up for the next two-plus periods. Travis Ingalls and Will Rosenbeck both played very well in net for the Flames, earning the shutout. The 2010 Flames gave up scoring chances throughout, but they also got better in the offensive end as the game went on. They held the puck in the offensive end for much of the final period, but the Flames were not able to add to their lead. So, a 1-0 win would have to suffice.
- Travis holds the near post and prepares to slide right as the puck is passed through the slot.
- Here the Flames lighten up their pressure just a touch after Travis yelled, “Keep it movin! Nothing to see here!”
- Soucy lets a shot rip from a tough angle. This shot caused a commotion at net front and almost turned into a goal.
- Cam shows off his flexibility, and scoring prowess on this goal for the Flames.
Manchester probably gave up more of the odd-man rushes type scoring chances to the Cyclones but Ingalls, Rosenbeck, and the D were able to keep the puck out of the net. On the other hand, the Flames had some long possessions with the puck in the offensive end but could not cash them into goals.
- “On the go” Desruisseaux almost scored on this bid as well.
- Will gets the pads flared out just in time. Classic butterfly against the Cyclones.
- I knew an old potato farmer in Aroostook County Maine named Gillies McCain.
- One day, I hope these kids fully understand the bond that comes from doing battle together time and time again. I am thinking they will.
With the Flames killing a penalty during the first period, Caleb Powers and Finley Dunn teamed up to thwart a Cyclones scoring bid. The puck was pushed forward, out of the defensive end and off of Brayden Gillies stick. Cam Desruisseaux took the puck immediately at center ice with some speed. Cam skated the puck wide on the right wing, and I was wondering, “Ummm, Cam? Where are you going?” Then he set his edges and cut hard, back to the middle and onto his forehand. Then as he approached the near-side post he shot the puck with enough lift to get the puck up and over the goalie’s glove, just inside the post. And that was it for the game. The Cyclones did hit the outside of the post in the third period but nobody else was able to post a goal on the board.
- 2010 Flames face-off stock photo. A place to gather, reset, and go to battle.
- Jordan has been mixing it up in the slot a little more often lately, and getting on the score sheet as a result.
- The Freight Train chugs up the left wing for a shot on net with a lot of Flames in support.
- Will slides over and gets a pad on this point blank shot from the Cyclones.
The Flames have a practice and family skate on Monday night this week. Of course there’s a Merry Christmas on Saturday. Then they hit the ice again, on Sunday, December 26th at 10:40am down in Hudson against the Cyclones EHF team.
- The Flames were all over the offensive zone in the final period, and a few players thought that this shot had crossed the line for a Flames goal.
- Here we catch a glimpse of “Mucho Dinero” Casimiro shooting a puck on net through a gap in the coverage.
- The Flames surround Will and themselves as they celebrate a 1-0 win against the Cyclones.
- Travis played the first half of the game and joined the celebration on the way to hand shakes.
Here are my brief box score summaries of the games from the weekend:
Team Scoring: Saturday morning at West Side Arena.
Cyclones: 0-0-0 = 0
Flames: 1-0-0 = 1
Flames scoring: Desruisseaux from Gillies and Dunn.
Travis Ingalls (0 goals allowed) and Will Rosenbeck (0 goals allowed) combined to play very well in big moments and earn the shutout victory for the Flames.
Merry Christmas everyone! Presents are pretty cool, but this group of kids and their families are a tremendous gift to one another. Sincerely, this teams’ camaraderie from oldest to youngest and everywhere in between is pretty special.
