Amidst an odd time in our history, an oddly scheduled weeknight game during a vacation week, was played between the Monarchs and the 2010 Flames. The game was played at West Side Arena before a packed house of 71. While the parents spent the first period confirming what day it actually was, the game featured a whole bunch of nothing clicking on the ice.
- After a 1-0 first period, the Flames were roaring for the rest of the game…
- …this off-speed breakaway shot went in for Sean McGee to give the Flames a 4-0 lead in the 2nd period.
Each team was assessed a penalty in the first period, and only one goal was scored. The goal came when Jordan Hawkes scored on the power play for the Flames. Hawkes put the puck in the net after consecutive shot attempts from his linemates, Sean McGee and Cam Desruisseaux. That was it for the period, and the Flames led, 1-0 at the break.

- Hawkes and Soucy lead the rush early in the game.
- Travis made this save in the first minute of the game, a key to the momentum of the Flames’ game.
- First period, Flames couldn’t get this chance to go.
- Travis, again, makes the save to keep what we all thought would be a tight game, scoreless.
- Teddy takes a shot at the net against the Monarchs.
- Caleb rips a shot on net but the puck was denied entrance into the net.
- Alex and Finley are back on D in front of Travis.
- Coach Dunn yells, “Powers! Get down!” Caleb wastes no time.
- Finley curled out of the corner, surveyed the situation, and took off, straight up the ice.
- After the first period, Coach Warren had the Flames so fired up that they were hard to contain.
The second period was a completely different story. First, the parents knew what day it was, and also the days that were coming next. Then, the Flames pumped in FIVE goals, killed a 5-on-3 shorthanded situation, and also killed a third penalty late in the period, leading, 6-0 after two periods. McGee scored after the Flames moved the puck like magic, with assists going to Desruisseaux and Finley Dunn. Soucy found the top corner for a goal assisted by Hawkes and Logan McCain. McGee on a breakaway from Teddy Beal. Then another McGee breakaway after a sweet touch pass from Beal.

- Cam winds up and pounds a shot on net against the Monarchs.
- This shot from Sean found the back of the net. Cam didn’t look thrilled with the execution.
- Alex tries his latest slight of hand with a curve shot around the defender.
- Here we see the follow through of Alex on one of his shots attempted.
- Cam and Teddy launch surprise attack on the Monarchs.
- Will slides over and holds his place, to make a save for the Flames.
- Cam got a quick shot away here, but the goalie’s pad just got enough of the puck to keep it out of the net.
- You can see the puck hit the net on one of Sean’s goals against the Monarchs.
- This shot from Caleb sneaks perfectly under the bar for a Flames goal.
- Logan uses his long reach in an effort to persuade opponents from taking the most direct route.
In the final period, the Flames picked up where they left off. Sean McGee stole the puck at center ice and bolted into the offensive end for another breakaway goal. At this time the parents were hoping to get a glimpse into McGee’s diet earlier in the day because everyone wanted some. The Monarchs got on the scoreboard when they scored on a power play, sneaking a puck through the five-hole. Then McGee answered when he scored on the rebound of a Brayden Gillies shot. Caleb Powers capped the scoring when he swiped a puck at center ice and ripped a shot from the right wing circle that found the net just under the crossbar. The Flames won the game, 9-1.
The 2010 Flames return to the ice on Friday morning as they play in the Winter Classic Tournament at Tri-Town Ice Arena in Hooksett, NH. The tournament runs Friday through Sunday.
