The Thanksgiving holiday weekend found the 2010 Flames competing in the Turkey Shootout 2022 hockey tournament. The Flames would end up playing five games in the space of 48 hours en route to a Championship bid.
The 2010 Flames opened the Turkey Shootout 2022 Tourney on Friday afternoon against Mad Dog Hockey. They played at Tri-Town Arena, and the Flames pulled out a 3-1 victory, scoring two goals in the final period to get the win. I was not there as I was at the Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert. I don’t have any pictures of the game, but you can see the scoring recap a little later down the page. One son delivered another son to us at SNHU Arena after the game and the show went on.
After a Friday that started in Connecticut, then included a hockey game, a concert, and an evening with good friends, we all needed some rest. The Flames needed some rest too, as they had to hit the road on Saturday morning for a tournament game down in Hudson, NH at Cyclones Arena. The Flames had a battle with the same hockey program they faced in the Bronze Medal game at Lake Placid.
This time though, the Thunder team they played was not made up of the same players that had traveled to Lake Placid. The Flames were able to score early, generating tremendous pressure right from the opening face-off. The Flames skated out of Cyclones Arena with a convincing win, and a 2-0 start to their tournament.
After roughly six hours between games, the Flames made their way back to Tri-Town Arena. They were there for their third and final game of the round-robin part of the tournament. These games would ultimately decide the teams seeding order for Sunday’s games. The top four teams would play in semifinal games on Sunday morning.
The Flames played the North Attleborough Devils on Ryan Frew Memorial Rink. The team knew from the earlier scores that this might not be the most competitive game. Kids played out of position and even opposite handed, but kept skating regardless. The Flames were the better team for sure, but they didn’t need to run up scores. So they had some fun trying different things. The Devils goalie ended up taking quite a spill and had to leave the game with an injury, unfortunately. We all hope that the player is doing okay and back to good health.
The 2010 Flames were able to get the win, which included a goal from one of their goaltending tandem who played center for the game. Travis Ingalls scored the first goal of the game and the team celebrated it like it was a last second game-winner. It was an early second game-winner instead. Will Rosenbeck played net for the Flames for the entirety of the game and pitched a shutout between the pipes.
After going 3-0-0 in round-robin play, the Flames ended up as the #1 seed for the semifinals. The Mad Dogs finished as the #4 seed (1-1-1). The #2 seed went to the Oyster River Cats (3-0-1), and #3 went to the Wilmington Wildcats (2-1-0). So, the Flames had a rematch with the Mad Dogs, and Oyster River had a rematch with Wilmington. The Flames had squeaked out a 3-1 win in their first match-up with the Mad Dogs, while Oyster River had beaten Wilmington by a score of at least, 6-0.
While the semifinals were played at roughly the same time, I share that Oyster River beat Wilmington again, by a score of at least, 10-4. This meant that the Cats had scored at least 33 goals in their last two games. They had beaten the Devils on Saturday night by a 23-0 count.
The Flames battled with the Mad Dogs again, as well as one official that just seemed to be auditioning for Broadway, or the WWE. Animation in real life. Anyways, the Flames took three penalties in the opening period. Regardless, the Flames got a shorthanded goal by Logan McCain and led, 1-0 after one period.
Chase Giampa scored on an impressive rush, broke a few tackles, and scored to give the Flames a 2-0 lead. A few more Flames penalties gave the Mad Dogs an edge, and they broke through with a goal of their own. The Mad Dogs made a serious push to tie the game or more throughout the second period. The score was 2-1 after two periods.
The Flames got their motivational intermission speech from the coaching staff and they came out to execute their plan. I don’t know what the plan was, but on the opening shift the Flames scored. Ian Kaveney, Jacob St. Pierre, and Teddy Beal took the puck up the ice and worked themselves into position to score. They executed good passes leading to Ian’s goal at the front of the net, and a fist pump that the whole team felt. The Flames had turned whatever the second period was leading to, into a two goal lead on the first shift of the final period.
Despite the Flames taking another three penalties in the period, they scored another goal. Andy Soucy finished on a great feed from Jordan Hawkes that started with Sean McGee. The Flames had a 4-on-4 goal and a 4-1 lead. The Mad Dogs kept coming. Fighting for every puck and trying to come back. The Flames held on to win, 4-1 and earned a spot in the Championship game. I heard Flames talk about the toughest opponent in the tourney was the Mad Dogs.
Later in the afternoon the Flames were back at the rink to play the Oyster River Cats in the Turkey Shootout 2022 Championship Game. The only two teams that had not lost in their division met for the top spot. The Flames had piled up 15 goals in their final two games entering Sunday afternoon, but that failed in comparison to the 33 goals that the Cats had scored in the final two games.
While the Soviets (USSR) were dominating international hockey for nearly four decades, they had a mindset that they relentlessly trained for, and fully believed. They believed they were in better physical condition than their opponents and that they would dominate third periods (which they almost always did). They also thought that they could win games in the first five minutes by coming out hard and fast and breaking their opponent’s spirit. That they did often as well.
Well, if the Flames weren’t thinking about that kind of thing in the title game, I was. I really thought that if the Flames could come out fast and hard against Oyster River, they might just get a lead and never look back. Well, after the first period, the Flames held a 5-0 lead.
The Flames were everywhere. They owned the offensive zone. When the puck came out of the zone, the Flames brought it right back in. The Flames enjoyed a 3-goal outburst in just over three minutes of elapsed time midway through the period. Just like that, the game was over, or close to it.
With the Flames taking a barrage of penalties in the middle period, they were shorthanded for several minutes. At one point, the Cats had a 5-on-3 power play, and they were able to score, cutting the lead to 6-1 at the time. The Flames added a pair of goals down the stretch, and ran away with the Championship, 8-1. The Flames had done exactly what they had set out to do by playing their best game of the tournament in the title game. The entire team was flying, and making plays. Will and Travis were great in net, per usual, and the Flames went 5-0 in the tournament.
In typical 2010 Flames fashion, 15 players skated at least one shift on offense or defense, in Turkey Shootout 2022. All 15 skaters scored at least one goal in the tournament. In three games against teams that made the semifinal round, the Flames only allowed 3 total goals, while scoring 15 goals. I know Will and Travis weren’t tested much at times, but when they were, they were ready. They played outstanding. The whole team played well. Well done.

Championship Game Turkey Shootout 2022
Score by period:
Oyster River: 00 – 01 – 00 = 01
Flames: 05 – 01 – 02 = 08
- Powers skates down the slot like a public skate and rips a shot into the net, on a breakup/ tip pass from Ouellette.
- Flames hem Oyster River in, every clear is an ice or regained at center ice. Booth to Lazzaro, dumps it in deep. Warren and Ouellette forecheck causing the turnover. Ouellette to Soucy in the corner. Soucy shoots from a tough angle and is the last one to know that he scored.
- Booth skates in from the blue line and fires a shot set up by Beal and McGee. Awesome rush up the wing and then passing in the zone.
- Hawkes from the slot – quick shot (just making good hockey plays) after the puck bounced through traffic in front, from Giampa and St. Pierre.
- McCain nimble as ever, actually dislocated my back by changing direction at the blue line to keep the puck in the zone. As he continued his momentum he shot the puck across his body and found the far side top corner. Wow!
- Opening face-off of the second period, Soucy beats a pair of D and shoots. The puck lays in the crease for a millisecond and Ouellette sweeps it in for the goal.
- After four Flames penalties and a Cats goal, Ouellette struck again from inches away. The goalie dropped the puck in the crease as Lucas skated by and slapped the puck in. Assists to Lazzaro and Soucy.
- The Flames finished things off with a power play goal on McGee’s tap in of the rebound from Powers shot. The play was started by Booth’s pass at the blue line.

I took more pictures in some games, less in others, and none in another. I hope you find some pictures to your liking. My goal is to share these fleeting, but special moments in time, of one of the purest joys in life, of kids at play. Playing a sport they love and choose to participate in.
As always with these galleries, please feel free to click on the pictures, and zoom in to have a look around. Also, please enjoy! The title of the picture will give you clues if you need them. This is for the kids. Thank you for your time.
