This weekend’s time commitment was shortened by a pair of games being removed from the team’s schedule. Still, the 2010 Flames had all they could handle in the games they did play this weekend. They just seemed to be one step behind.
On Saturday the Flames played host to the Crimson Hockey Club at West Side Arena. The Crimson came out and gave the Flames a smack in the face with their skating, structure, and execution throughout the first period. The Flames were at least one step behind. The Crimson led the game 3-0 after one period and it could have been even worse.
With the Flames skating one step behind, they reached with their sticks where skating strides came up short, and they took penalties. The 2010 Flames took 9 penalties in the game and allowed two power play goals while curtailing their own efforts to come back in the game.
The Flames did get a single goal in the second period and another one in the final period, but they were not able to dig out of the hole they found themselves in after one period. On the power play, the 2010 Flames scored a beautiful goal with passing and puck movement to cut the lead to 3-1. That score would hold through two periods.
The Crimson added a 4-on-3 power play goal early in the 3rd period and that really broke the Flames’ backs. Although they did score to make the score, 4-2 several minutes later. The Flames worked the puck up the ice with some effort and got a shot, a good bounce, and a well aimed finish into the top corner. That was it though, 4-2 final.

Score by period:
Crimson HC: 03 – 00 – 01 = 04
Flames: 00 – 01 – 01 = 02
Flames goals in order:
- Sweet power play goal. Powers goes D to D to Lazzaro for a shot from the left point. Kaveney puts the rebound in after getting up and out of the corner after a check that wasn’t called.
- Beal goes one-touch, top corner, far side after Kaveney’s shot is blocked coming up left wing. Assists to Kaveney and Petrie.
Sunday, December 04, 2022. West Side Arena.
Score by period:
Shamrocks Orange: 01 – 01 – 01 = 03
Flames: 00 – 00 – 01 = 01
- Kaveney scores on the backhand, set up by a classic Giampa rush up the left wing to the front of the net. Chase lost the puck, or had it poke checked. Ian was there with him and flipped the backhand into the open side of the net causes by Giampa’s wake left in the crease area.
On Sunday, the Flames played a better game from start to finish. Travis Ingalls played well early and only gave up one goal, against the power play. The Shamrocks power play goal in the first period was well executed, and they took a 1-0 lead to the first intermission. In the second period, the Flames fell behind 2-0 after Will Rosenbeck was left with no help in the crease, making a few saves before a rebound was tapped into the net. The Flames were down 2-0 after two periods.
The 2010 Flames kept playing hard and creating some scoring chances. The goaltender for the Shamrocks really stole the 3rd period from the Flames. The goaltending in the game was outstanding on both sides, and maybe the Flames were still one step behind, but they sure did get some chances to tie the game. Rosenbeck made a huge save against a 2-on-1 break, and the Flames scored the other way a minute later to cut the lead to 2-1. The Flames turned the puck over at their own blue line and then a perfect shot hit the crossbar and went in. They were down, 3-1.
The Flames pulled their goaltender with 75 seconds to play, and they created a couple of great chances but couldn’t beat the goaltender. Less than 30 seconds later the Flames took a penalty and that ended any comeback bid. The Flames dropped the decision, 3-1.
The Flames are back on the ice this weekend, with a Saturday game against a different NS Shamrocks team down on the North Shore. Then early on Sunday morning the 2010 Flames will play host to the Minuteman Flames, a very good team. Early games at JFK Coliseum in Manchester have not been a great combo for the Flames this season, and their opponent this time will be another good test. The team had better be ready to play.
