December 30, 2022 – 2022 Winter Classic Game 1:
The 2010 Flames opened the 2022 Winter Classic with a Friday evening game against the Franklin Flyers. The Flames prevailed in this one and will play two more games tomorrow.
Friday, December 30, 2022. Tri-Town Arena – South Rink.
2022 Winter Classic Game 1.
Score by period:
Flyers: 00 – 00 – 01 = 01
Flames: 03 – 03 – 03 = 09
Flames goals in order:
- Andy Soucy took the puck away from the Flyers and skated in for a backhand goal to get the Flames on the board. Soucy unassisted, 1-0.
- I think every Flame player on the ice touched the puck before this goal was scored. Garrett Warren flipped the puck toward the net and a scramble for the rebound ensued. Chase Giampa and Lucas Ouellette were poking at the puck until it went across the goal line. Giampa made it clear that Ouellette had scored the goal by pointing at Lucas when the refs were looking for help. Well done Chase. Ouellette from Giampa and Warren, 2-0.
- Logan McCain gathered the puck at center ice and calmly waited for his teammates to clear the offensive zone. Then skated across the blue line, and made a couple of moves with the puck before depositing a shot in the upper half of the net. McCain unassisted, 3-0.
- The Flames had the puck in the offensive zone for quite some time before Jaden Booth read the play and picked off a clearing attempt by the Flyers. As Booth moved along the blue line to steal the puck he drifted into traffic at the top of the right wing circle and let a shot fly. The puck found the back of the net through the traffic. Booth unassisted, 4-0.
- Soucy struck again on a nice set up from Cooper Lazzaro. Cooper moved over to the side wall to take away the puck on a clearing attempt by the Flyers. Then he stepped in for a shot toward the net that hit a defender’s skate in the slot. The puck came right to Soucy who pumped it up and under the crossbar for the Flames goal. Soucy from Lazzaro, 5-0.
- Logan McCain took the puck at center ice and carried it into the offensive zone, weaving through some defenders on his way toward the net. He tried a shot that was blocked and stayed on his stick. Logan recovered and slipped a pass across the crease to a wide open Jacob St. Pierre on the doorstep. St. Pierre tapped the puck in for another Flames goal. St. Pierre from McCain, 6-0.
- This goal was set up by the Flames working the puck from D to D out top. Caleb Powers swept the puck along the blue line to Jaden Booth. Booth fired a low hard shot through the slot. Teddy Beal got his stick on the puck and deflected the puck right up underneath the crossbar on the first shift of the final period. Beal from Booth and Powers, 7-0.
- Jacob St. Pierre grabbed a loose puck right at center ice and skated through an obstacle course of defenders to get to the slot. Once he arrived at the front of the net, he had some space to fire a shot into the net. St. Pierre unassisted, 8-0.
- St. Pierre capped off the hat trick on another beautiful set up from a line mate. Cooper Lazzaro made a nice outlet pass to Sean McGee while the Flames were shorthanded. McGee used his speed to get to the slot in the offensive zone before dishing a pass to St. Pierre who fired the puck into the net. St. Pierre from McGee and Lazzaro (SHG), 9-0.
Will Rosenbeck and Travis Ingalls didn’t have much to do in the nets against the Flyers. I am sure that will change as soon as tomorrow. Hopefully, they will be rested and ready.
The 2010 Flames return to the ice tomorrow morning at 11:40 AM for their second game of the 2022 Winter Classic Tournament this weekend. They will play the Maine Gladiators – Black.
