2010 Flames vs. Richmond Generals
After all the players and assorted members of their families arrived in Washington, DC or Sterling, VA to begin tournament play, it was time to take the ice. The first game was scheduled at 1:50pm and started a few minutes late. The 2010 Flames took a 2-0 lead after one period and squeezed a third goal out of the second period, before adding three more in the final period. The Flames were off to a good start with a 6-0 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Saturday was DC Day 1 for the 2010 Flames. They opened play with a solid opponent, the Richmond Generals. The Flames scored early, but overall started a little bit discombobulated. They led, 2-0 after one period but Richmond was not going away. The Flames managed a power play goal in the second period and killed their own infraction. The Flames took three penalties in the final period, but managed to score a shorthanded goal and two more, to earn the 6-0 win. Ingalls and Rosenbeck saved everything they saw and made sure their team had every chance to win, and they did.
- Flames goal – Lazzaro fired a shot on goal that was saved but dropped at the feet of the goalie. Warren was right there to fire the rebound into the net, for a 1-0 lead. Warren from Lazzaro. GWG.
- Flames goal – Powers skated through the corner and centered a pass to the slot. Mooney was in the slot and backhanded the puck past the goaltender for the Flames goal. Mooney from Powers. 2-0.
- Flames power play goal – Ouellette carried the puck down the left wing and put a shot right on net. Soucy was on the spot for the rebound and he shot the puck on net but it was saved, then again, the same sequence, before finally tapping the puck past the skate of the goaltender. PPG Soucy from Ouellette. 3-0.
- Flames goal – This was a great goal that started way back in the D zone. Petrie hit Kaveney with an outlet pass and Kaveney sprinted up the middle. He dished a pass to Beal on the off wing (his left) and Beal closed with speed toward the net. Beal ripped a shot and the rebound fell in front of the net. Kaveney had continued in a straight line to the crease and got there just in time to push the puck through the five-hole for the Flames goal. Kaveney from Beal and Petrie. 4-0.
- Flames shorthanded goal – Giampa spun and fired a shot that hit a stick and popped straight up in the air. The puck sailed like a well placed punt and came down behind the goalie and into the net. You couldn’t have thrown the puck on a better trajectory. Drumm and Hawkes had touches on the puck before Hawkes nudged the puck into Giampa’s wheelhouse for the goal. SHG Giampa from Hawkes and Drumm. 5-0.
- Flames goal – Powers swiped a clearing attempt and carried the puck the slot area before ripping a wrister into the back of the net. Powers unassisted. 6-0.

DC Day 1
After a retreat to the team hotel, everyone gathered their family members and executed on different routes and plans to get to Capital One Arena for a preseason NHL hockey game between the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Washington Capitals. The 2010 Flames were going to an NHL preseason game in downtown DC.
The Capitals ended up losing the game, 4-2, but it was a good game overall. Some great saves, some goals, some big hits, and a few fights, and the team families had a great night in the city.
