ION International Training Center Arena Rink and Haymarket Iceplex South Rink – October 8, 2023 – DC Day 2 – 2010 Flames (MRYHA)
Congressional Cup Fall Classic
2010 Flames at Delaware Ducks
2010 Flames vs. Clearwater Ice Storm
The 2010 Flames battled and found a way to win a tough game against the Delaware Ducks, 4-0.
During the game I was talking with an official for the tournament who was off duty for the game. He was a real nice guy, and we chatted some. He asked me about our team, our team dynamic. I told him how much the kids have had enjoyed playing with this group primarily due to the kids being able to play in all situations, line after line, shorthanded, power play, end of game, etc. installing confidence in the kids from top to bottom no matter how you slice it. I told him that we were fortunate to have a coach, one voice, that just let the kids play.
Game one of the day featured the 2010 Flames against the Delaware Ducks at the ION International Training Center. The Flames managed a 4-0 win in a solid effort. But some red flags were certainly present. These included much more individual play, less passing, and taking 7 penalties that totaled 22 minutes. On the other hand, the team defended well and it’s hard to lose when you don’t allow goals.
The Flames went up 3-0 and it looked like the Duck might fold, but they did the opposite. They came back even harder. Then the Flames added a handful of penalties to fuel their fire. The 2010 Flames ended up killing several minutes of penalties, and a couple of times were down 5-on-3. Penalties obviously hurt the team in the moment but it also disrupts the flow of the lines, amount of playing time that normally comes to a line or D pair is shattered and disjointed which hurts the team even more. The Flames prevailed but it was a bit disjointed.
- Flames goal – The Flames had the puck down low and Ouellette wrapped the puck around the end boards to Mooney. Mooney fired the puck toward the net, kind of, but it ended up in the left wing circle. Drumm happened to be there and he settled the puck and wired a shot into the net for the Flames goal. Drumm from Mooney and Ouellette. 1-0. GWG.
- Flames goal – Kaveney started the break from the D zone by moving the puck to Booth who was revved and raring to get up the ice. Booth carried through center ice and got a shot on net but it was turned away. Beal had been skating up the left wing and pounced on the rebound, calmly putting the puck in the net for the goal. Beal from Booth and Kaveney. 2-0.
- Flames goal – This goal started with a great defensive play by Booth and St. Pierre in tandem. They both hustled back in good position to break up a scoring bid. Booth ended up with the puck and flipped it to Mooney on the counter attack. Mooney carried and moved the puck to Ouellette who was able to get a backhander off that found the twine. Ouellette from Mooney and Booth. 3-0.
- Flames shorthanded empty net goal – This goal allowed me to release my heart from my throat. Ya, it was 3-0, but the Flames had been killing a 5-on-3 for what seemed like forever. The Duck pulled their goalie to get the 6-on-3 advantage on the ice. After one icing call, Lazzaro gained possession of a loose puck all the way back in the D zone and from the circle he sent another clearing attempt that ended up finding the empty net to give the Flames a 4-0 lead. SHG – EN – Lazzaro unassisted. 4-0.
(MRYHA) 2010 Flames: 00 – 03 – 01 = 04
Delaware Ducks: 00 – 00 – 00 = 00
- Flames goal – Soucy won an offensive zone face-off and the puck slid over to Mooney. Mooney fired immediately from the circle and beat the goaltender with the shot. The element of surprise, or just taking a quick shot before anyone was set. Mooney from Soucy. 4-1.
Clearwater Ice Storm: 03 – 01 – 00 = 04
(MRYHA) 2010 Flames: 00 – 00 – 01 = 01
DC Day 2
DC Day 2
I didn’t get many pictures of the Ducks game and the ones I got were mostly terrible and blurry. So here is what I have. For the game against Clearwater I was assessed a 39 minute penalty which I served in the home team penalty box. I was told by my hockey accountant that I could write that off as ‘volunteering’ so that worked out. I did take a few pictures from there, but I haven’t looked at them yet, and frankly I don’t expect much.
For some excellent pictures, please check out Nichole’s page and pictures, they are outstanding.

DC Day 2 vs. Clearwater Ice Storm
DC Day 2 ended late for me and I trudged off to bed thinking about this. Would I ever be in a situation where I would lay this beauty of a line on someone? “Are you feeling froggy? Then jump.”
When I awoke this morning to a new dawn, a day that wasn’t promised to any of us, I had a lot on my mind. One thought that kept circling back to the forefront of my mind was the recollection of a sermon I have heard a few times in the last year or two. I was thinking about Micah 6:8. and these words, “…and what does the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love (showing) mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”
I was thinking on this story. There was a mother that went to Napoleon. Her son had committed a second offense and it was worthy of death. Justice demanded his death. So the mother went to Napoleon. She said sire, I’m not asking for justice for my son, I’m pleading for mercy. And Napoleon replied, but he doesn’t deserve mercy. And the mother said, yes sir, you’re right, but it wouldn’t be mercy if he deserved it and mercy is all I’m asking. And Napoleon replied that I will show mercy.
It’s hard because you don’t want to give people what they don’t deserve. That’s mercy. So yes, let’s punish the evil doers, for sure, let’s confront wrong and evil wherever we find it, but what he’s saying is, whenever we can, wherever we can, however we can, let’s show mercy enough to love it.
I was thinking of how awful life would have turned out for so many of us if we were constantly defined by our weakest or worst moments. I am paraphrasing Dr. James Merritt here, but this lesson, to me, is so powerful, so needed.
Ya, so that was at the forefront of my mind before the sun came up this morning. Micah 6:8 and Dr. James Merritt.
Thanks for sticking with me. I hope the team, our coaches, and our families all have a wonderful Monday and that we lift each other up, just because each of us possesses the power to do so. Simple as that. We each choose the next step, the next choice, no matter the pressures or the emotions. The next action is up to us in every single moment. Powerful.
And by the way, this group came to DC to play hockey and have some fun. And our kids are playing in a #1 vs. #4 Semi-final. That’s pretty awesome! There are six teams in our division that are not in the mix.
