3 wins and 250 miles later, the Flames earned three victories, and puck possession, teamwork, and goaltending were the keys to the victories. Now it’s Monday night and the team is back on the ice for practice.
Saturday morning at West Side Arena the 2010 Flames hosted the Lakers from Lakes Region. The Flames won the game handily on the scoreboard and time of possession. What didn’t really show up was the play of the firm, Ingalls and Rosenbeck. These two played very well throughout their minutes played. Seriously, they were tested in between offensive zone dominations by their teammates, and they played very well, earning the combined shutout.
As the firm’s commercials say, “We do everything in our power to make sure you don’t win.” Which makes sense, in this case.
- Flames goal – The Flames controlled the offensive zone for most of the game. On this play the Flames worked the puck back to the defense at the point. Lazzaro passed across to Booth who one-timed a shot that was blocked. He got the puck back and pushed the puck into the corner to Ouellette. Ouellette threw a shot/pass toward the net at a bad angle from below the goal line which played out perfectly for the Flames. The puck hit the back of the goalie and bounced into the net. Ouellette from Booth and Lazzaro. 1-0. GWG.
- Flames goal – The puck again was controlled by the Flames with possession. Powers took the puck at the left point and stepped in for a shot, but he passed low to Kaveney in the circle. Kaveney got the puck behind the net to Beal. Beal stepped to the side of the net and fed Giampa a pass right on to his forehand for a shot and a goal from the slot. Great play to move the puck by the whole team. Giampa from Beal and Kaveney. 2-0.
- Flames steal and score – The Flames had possession, lost it for a second and then got it back when Beal stole the wrap around clearing attempt. Beal spotted Powers out high and hit him with a pass. Powers ripped a shot through traffic that went wide and hit the end boards. The puck caromed off the boards, then off of Giampa, right on to Beal’s stick in front of the net. Beal put the puck in the net for the goal. Beal from Giampa and Powers. 3-0.
- Another steal and score – The Lakers had the puck in their end for about a second. Petrie took the puck off the defender’s stick and moved the puck behind the net to Ouellette. Ouellette tried to jam the puck into the net at the near post but got all pad. Soucy happened to be in the area and he poked the puck over the goal line for the Flames goal. Soucy from Ouellette and Petrie. 4-0.
- Flames goal – The Flames were on the rush with the puck, sort of. Yes, they were pressing the puck up the ice but the puck seemed to be accessible to both teams all the way up the ice. As the Flames crossed the blue line, the defense was playing the puck when Hawkes tipped the puck away from the Lakers. The puck was right in the same lane that Ouellette was skating in. Ouellette got a shot on net but the goalie made a pad save. Hawkes had curled toward the net and was ‘Johnny on the spot’ and tapped the puck into the net. Hawkes from Ouellette. 5-0.
- Flames final goal – The puck was in the offensive zone but it was loose for a moment. As the puck squirted out of the corner, it came to Soucy who spun around and made a nice pass to Lazzaro at the point. Lazzaro made a delayed move to the middle and left defenders in his wake as walked down through the slot. Lazzaro closed and pounded a shot into the net for the goal. Lazzaro from Soucy. 6-0.

Immediately after the Saturday morning win at West Side Arena, the 2010 Flames had to hit the road for a game down at Bavis Arena. Eventually the team arrived for the second game of the day. The game started about 15 minutes later than scheduled, so everyone had time to get where they needed to be. The 2010 Flames dominated most of the play throughout but they had some difficulty beating the Terrier goaltender at times throughout the game. The Flames did get it done though, with a 5-1 win on the road.
This game was another example of the Flames moving the puck pretty well and possessing the puck. There were some individual rushes and the occasional ‘hold the puck to shoot’ when others might be open for a pass, but overall, the Flames were utilizing everyone on the ice to get their game going.
The Flames goaltenders were able to hold the fort when the Terriers put together a few breaks and odd-man rushes. They did get there chances. Great effort all the way around.
- Flames goal – This goal was all Powers. Powers stole a clearing attempt at the offensive blue line and retreated to center ice to make sure he was onside. He also held possession so that his team could change lines. Then, before the line change was complete, Powers galloped into the offensive zone to the right wing circle and fired a wrist shot through a defender screen and in between the post and the goaltender. Great goal. Powers unassisted. 1-0.
- Flames goal – Lazzaro shot the puck on net but it was saved. Beal swiped at it but the puck went behind the net. The puck worked through the corner back to Lazzaro who moved the puck in deep. Kaveney took the puck and hit Ouellette in the slot for a perfect one-time wrist shot and score. Ouellette from Kaveney and Lazzaro. 2-0. GWG.
- Flames goal – The Flames won the offensive zone face-off when Ouellette slid the puck over to Kaveney. Kaveney was immediately tied up by the defense but forced the puck behind the net before the Terriers could take over. Beal hustled to the back of the net and beat the defender to the puck. Beal stepped out from behind the goal line and slid a back hand shot that found the five-hole for the Flames goal. Just a great play by the three forwards starting with the face-off. Beal from Kaveney and Ouellette. 3-0.
- This play started with a great save by Rosenbeck. Lazzaro took the rebound off of the pad and swept an outlet pass to Petrie. Petrie tipped the puck ahead to Soucy on the fly. Soucy sped up the right wing and dropped a pass back to Petrie. Petrie fired the puck wide of the net (I’m sure on purpose) and the puck bounced hard off of the end boards. The puck came right to Mooney who fired the puck into the net before the goalie could get over to the post. Great play after giving up an odd-man rush. Mooney from Petrie and Soucy. 4-0.
- Flames goal – Booth kept the puck in the zone by pinching along the boards. He moved the puck to Soucy in the circle who dished a pass to Mooney for a shot. The shot wasn’t at a great angle but Mooney drilled it, hitting the net just inside the far post. Another great team play. Mooney from Soucy and Booth. 5-1.

Sunday morning the sun was out and there were actually some beautiful autumn colors revealing themselves along the roadways of NH. It was a pleasant morning.
For me, it was another trip to Rochester Arena. I was thinking of how many times I have been there in the last 15 years or so, and that number has to be in the 40’s at least. Between youth hockey and high school hockey, I seem to get out there quite a bit. I must say that the Rochester Arena (inside and out) has been vastly improved over the years. It’s a great place to catch a game.
As for the game, the 2010 Flames played very well for about half of the game, maybe a little more. Don’t get me wrong, the visiting team from MRYHA certainly played well enough to earn the win. And they did win by playing well as a team and holding a 5-0 lead after two periods. By period the 2010 Flames were +3 in the 1st period. They were +2 in the 2nd period. And they were -2 in the 3rd period. They held on, 5-2.
Things did get a little sloppy though, and team play morphed into what I call ‘agenda based’ hockey. Which in my book, looks like this: carry the puck instead of passing it – hold the puck and force the shot instead of hitting a teammate with a pass to continue the flow of the game or to create a better shot – or just move the puck from one player to another to make it near impossible to defend – trying to force hits where they’re not necessary or even borderline legal.
- Flames opening goal – Santitto took a shot from the right point that was on net and Beal redirected the puck on its flight to the net, but the goalie made a nice save. The save produced a nice rebound that Kaveney collected and inspected before demolishing a shot with his new twig into the back of the net. Kaveney from Beal and Santitto. 1-0.
- Flames slapper goal – The ref called off icing at the last second and when Rochester wrapped the puck behind the net to get it to their wing, it was picked off by Mooney. Mooney spun and whipped a pass through the slot that nobody handled and the puck hit the far side boards. This is where St. Pierre eased to the top of the circle with his stick held high toward the rafters like a salute to the adoring throngs of fans wearing his replica jersey in the stands. St. Pierre pounded the puck from the top of the circle and it sped like, well, like a puck struck by a bantam player, but high and true as the little disc found the twine for the goal. St. Pierre from Mooney. 2-0.
- Flames goal – The Flames had a rush with Hawkes, Drumm, and Giampa but that play just missed on producing a goal. Rochester had one touch to clear, but Hawkes stole it in the slot and passed quickly to Giampa down low. Giampa’s forehand shot was saved, but he grabbed the rebound and slid the backhand shot into the net. Awesome goal immediately after the turnover. Giampa from Hawkes. 3-0. GWG.
- Flames goal – After a bouncing puck skipped out to center ice the Flames had to tag up to be onsides. They did. Powers retrieved the elusive puck and weaved into the offensive zone before dropping a pass to Beal out high at the right point. Beal let a shot fly with Powers continuing to the net. The shot was good, and true, in the sense that it glanced off of a defenders arm and into the net. Beal from Powers. 4-0.
- Power play goal – After some passing with Beal, Giampa, St. Pierre and Booth, with nothing clicking, a goal materialized. St. Pierre pilfered a feeble clearing attempt and glided in on a ‘mini-skate-about’. A ‘mini-skate-about’ is similar to a ‘walkabout’. With walkabout being defined like this – “an informal stroll among a crowd”. Anyways, on St. Pierre’s ‘mini-walk-about’ he dangled down through the circle to the goal line before sending a pass to the crease where Beal was up for the battle. Beal poked at the puck repeatedly like an anxious dog tapping the tennis ball ever closer until someone picks it up and fires it to the dog’s wondrous and great delight. Eventually, the puck was in the net and the ref spotted it behind the goaltender. Power Play Goal – Beal from St. Pierre. 5-0.
