Thank you to our Veterans. Thank you. Seriously, what else do you say? They are willing to sacrifice their own life for the betterment of ours, based on a belief system that relies on fellow humans, many of whom would never lay down their life for another. Thank you.
The 2010 Flames played three games over the weekend. All three games were played in New Hampshire where some of us would still stand and fight for the right to “Live Free or Die”. Happy Veterans Day! I truly wish that all of our Veterans were/are happy. We should do much to make sure that they are.
The 2010 Flames played a pair of games at West Side Arena on Saturday, Veterans Day. The first game was against the Back Bay Indians, a team that the Flames played last weekend up in Wolfeboro, NH.
- Flames goal – Giampa won the offensive zone face-off which immediately led to a few shots on goal by Giampa himself. Then he got the puck behind the net and centered a pass to wingman, Beal. Beal eventually got his stick on the ice and netted a backhand shot for the goal. Beal from Giampa. 1-0. GWG.
- Flames goal – Booth controlled the puck in the slot in front of his own net and started up ice. He hit Beal with a pass on the wing and the Flames were off to the races. Beal centered a pass that was just ahead of Mooney. Mooney was able to grab the puck in the corner and he spun while firing a low, hard shot that ramped up and over the goaltender off of the goalie’s stick. Mooney from Beal and Booth. 2-0.
- Flames goal – Petrie and Warren provided secondary forechecking while Giampa was creating havoc of his own. Then Petrie stole the puck on a clearing attempt and tipped to Giampa, who skated in on his forehand and buried the shot for the goal. Giampa from Petrie. 3-0.
- Flames goal – Lazzaro sent a puck into the slot but Soucy couldn’t connect with the pass until he chased it down in the circle. Soucy tried to hit Beal with a pass but it hit the ref and came back to him. Soucy stuffed a shot but it everything but the net before bouncing right to Mooney. Mooney calmly fired the puck into the net. Mooney from Soucy (the ref) and Lazzaro. 4-0.
- Booth goal – The 2010 Flames missed a chance or two to clear their zone with uninspired attempts. Then stepped in Booth. Booth picked off a shot from the point like it was meant for him in the first place. He tipped the puck to boards nobody on his team was. So he raced over, grabbed the puck and took off. He his full speed at center ice and flew over the blue line ahead of the rest of the Flames. He fired a low shot back to the post on the side he had just come from. Yup! He hit the net for the goal on the rush. Booth unassisted. 5-0. (The goal was so full of Booth-ness, the other Flames graciously refused their +1 for the shift and returned to the bench, giving all their +1’s to Booth). If this doesn’t make any sense then you were paying attention, but could use refresher on the +/- system in hockey.
- Flames goal – Lazzaro wrapped the puck around the boards where Ouellette grabbed it on the half wall. Soucy and Hawkes were ahead, in motion, on the breakout. Ouellette carried the puck up the left wing while the Soucy-Hawkes combo kept defenders honest. Ouellette held the puck and shot from the bottom of the circle for a Flames goal. Ouellette from Lazzaro. 6-0.
- Flames goal – After Ouellette and the boys lost a D-zone face-off, Rosenbeck made a fantastic pad save to shutout alive. Petrie ended up with the puck and made a sweet outlet pass to Warren at center ice. Warren sent a nice pass to Ouellette in the middle and Ouellette got a shot on net. Warren was rewarded for his pass by grabbing the rebound and firing the puck into the net. Warren from Ouellette and Petrie. 7-0.
Ingalls and Rosenbeck were brilliant in the nets for the Flames as they combined to earn a shutout win.

The 2010 Flames earned a win against a well coached team. This Oyster River team is pretty good. Once the Flames got their legs under them a little bit, they played much better, but their opponent had a lot to do with their struggles to score goals.
The Flames got caught with opponents behind one or both of the defensemen at times, but hustle and a pair of excellent goaltenders erased all such transgressions. On the other side of the ice, for every Flames player that doesn’t headman the puck to a teammate it almost always allows the defense to back check, catch up, get back, or whatever else you want to say, which usually makes scoring chances much harder to come by. Goals that come by this approach are reinforcing a bad habit that will catch up with team’s at some point.
- Flames ‘something from nothing’ Goal – The Flames cleared the puck from their own end and Petrie fired the puck up the boards but not hard enough for icing. Hawkes flew through center ice like the Broad-Winged hawks that dive at high speeds toward our chickens. Oyster River got to the puck first, but Hawkes was right there to create a turnover. He pushed the puck to Petrie. Petrie centered a beauty of a pass to Giampa in the low slot. Giampa made a quaint little move and fired the puck into the net for the goal. Giampa from Petrie and Hawkes. 1-0. GWG.
- Flames Power Play Goal – Giampa and the Flames lost the offensive zone face-off but Lazzaro made a nice play to keep the puck in at the blue line. Even then, Oyster River had a chance to clear but the attempt went right to Powers. Powers stepped into a wide open shot and fired through traffic. Giampa was there in the slot and deflected the puck beautifully past the goaltender for the goal. PPG – Giampa from Powers. 2-0.
- Flames goal – Powers raced back on D to break up a play in the D-zone and as he did he layered a little pass out wide to Soucy who was curling through the zone to start the break. Soucy broke out of the zone with speed and hit Ouellette with a nice pass. Ouellette carried into the zone with Soucy on his left, and fired a shot that broke through the goalie’s armor somewhere for the goal. Ouellette from Soucy and Powers. 3-0.

With the CMC Manchester City Marathon running through the streets of Manchester on November 12th, the routes to and from JFK Memorial Coliseum either took some extra planning or extra time, or both. But the teams made it to the rink to play some hockey.
The 2010 Flames played a solid game and jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two periods. They held on for a 7-2 win to cap a 3-win weekend. The Flames are a good team, and can be so much better at the same time. They really have it made, with a coaching staff that allows them all to play in all situations, supportive families, and overall a great bunch of kids. The team continues to work hard and play right through each second of the games.
In watching the video of games, I am seeing what I consider, ‘way too many opportunities to pass to a teammate that are missed or ignored’. Not every pass is a good pass, but more passes make it much more difficult for a team to defend against a team that moves the puck, where everyone is a threat, not just one kid with the puck on 100′ rushes.
This team has seen this before, and just because some rushes lead to goals, most don’t. Anyways, ask all-time great, Teemu Selänne, how he scored 76 goals in his rookie season, and he would point to the passing ability of Phil Housley. There’s always an Adam Oates for every Brett Hull. A Patrice Bergeron, David Krejčí, or Brad Marchand for David Pastrňák. Teamwork.
- Flames goal – After some sloppy play from both sides, Santitto made a nice little curl move with the puck in the D zone to get a pass to Ouellette. Ouellette made a move and lost the puck right onto Giampa’s stick. Giampa broke out of the defensive end and then gave a nice little pass to Ouellette for a shot. The shot found the net. Ouellette from Giampa and Santitto. 1-0.
- Flames goal – Ouellette grabbed a misplayed puck off of the defense and shot from a tough angle but the puck hit the goalie and bounced into the net. Ouellette unassisted. 2-0.
- Flames goal – Off of the center ice face-off following the previous goal, the Flames worked the puck up the ice. Spacing was not good, but somehow it worked. Warren busts through the face-off grouping with the puck, like a fullback converting on 4th and short. Then over to Ouellette who made a short pass to Giampa. Giampa drifted to the right and dished a pass back to the slot where Warren and Ouellette were both in the same space. But, Warren had the better angle and look at the net and he buried a forehand shot for the goal. Warren from Giampa and Ouellette. 3-0. GWG.
- Flames goal – Ouellette had the puck pinned against the end boards behind the net in the offensive zone while three Terriers swatted at the puck like flies. Then Giampa crept in and pulled the puck out of the little shindig and turned to the net and stuffed the puck into the net, between the goalie’s skate and the post. Giampa from Ouellette. 4-0. Update: After further review of Ouellette raising both arms above his head several times, and a little birdie telling me differently, apparently the goal was Ouellette from Giampa.
- Flames goal – Hawkes hustled back and cut off a rushing Terrier along the boards. This allowed Mooney to grab the puck and clear the zone, but the Terriers were back and grabbed the puck in retreat. As Mooney pressured one defenseman, the D-man sent a pass into his defensive end, to his D partner. But the pass was rushed and bouncing. It hit the defenders stick in the slot and Soucy was right there to grab the puck and fire a shot into the net. Pressure caused the turnover and the Flames turned it into an immediate goal to close the second period. Soucy unassisted. 5-0.
- Flames goal – Lazzaro finally got the puck out of the defensive end with a nice pass to Warren. Warren carried into the offensive zone and kept possession of the puck even though he took a hit. Despite terrible spacing, Warren made a great pass to Soucy in the slot for a shot. Soucy’s shot bounced off of a defenders skate right to Ouellette on the doorstep, and he tapped it in. Ouellette from Soucy and Warren. 6-1.
- Flames goal – Powers chased down a loose puck in the D zone and sent it over to Santitto. Santitto made a nice clearing pass up the boards to Hawkes. Hawkes entered the offensive zone with a defender right with him, so he threw a bouncing puck toward the net and it kicked off of the goalie’s stick and into the net. Hawkes from Santitto and Powers. 7-1.

Countless hours of my life have been spent in the tracking of numbers while loving the sports and players that produce them.
