RI Road Trip – 2010 Flames
With the annual Army-Navy (Army won, 17-11 at Gillette Stadium) game being played just up the road, the 2010 Flames played three games against the Providence Hockey Club in Rhode Island over the weekend. With Providence being closer to the stadium than Boston, the Rhode Island capital was buzzing with activity. On the ice, the Flames played their hearts out.

The RI Road Trip began with me staying home. I was fortunate to spend Saturday and Sunday with my youngest daughter, to watch her skate and to watch her sing in her school chorus event. I was able to keep up with the hockey action through LiveBarn. Then, thankfully, I also had fellow hockey parents updating events in Rhode Island on our group chat.
Game one of the weekend was on Saturday at Lynch Arena. The Flames played well, but really didn’t take advantage of the opportunities they created for themselves throughout the game. They ended up outshooting their opponents, 37-24 in the game, but the scoreboard rules, and that read, 2-2. Both teams scored once on the power play, with the Providence PPG tying the game in the 3rd period.
Ingalls and Rosenbeck played well per usual. What gets lost in these games sometimes is that despite wins and tremendous team successes on the scoresheet, these two goaltenders come up with game changing saves all the time. Very few goals allowed are of the ‘soft’ variety. This is the job of the goalie. The last line of defense.
Team’s make mistakes that lead to breakaways and odd-man rushes, but a hockey team wouldn’t be a hockey team if goalies they didn’t include goalies. And as part of the team, they not only stop goals from being scored, but often times they allow the team’s momentum to continue rolling forward. Any good goalie would tell you, it’s team.
- Flames first goal, on the power play – Soucy won the draw in the offensive end. Hawkes stepped in to push the loose puck back to Powers at the point. Powers fired from the circle and found the net inside the far post. Textbook win the O zone draw, shoot, and score. PPG – Powers from Hawkes and Soucy. 1-0.
- Flames goal – Booth slid up the wall to keep the puck in the zone and get it deep, behind the net. Soucy grabbed the puck and worked his magic with a nice hard pass from Gretzky’s office out to the slot. Hawkes was in the slot and gathered the pass just in time to fire a shot into the back of the net. Great play. Hawkes from Soucy and Booth. 2-1.

Game two of the weekend was on Sunday morning. The team stayed in hotels for the RI Road Trip, so the commute was pretty simple to the morning game. The 2010 Flames had to play Providence Hockey Club (South) twice on Sunday. Since losing (they split two games at West Side Arena) to the Flames back in September, this Providence team had won 10 while losing only two (the two losses were both to the undefeated Boch-sters).
For the doubleheader on Sunday, Rosenbeck played the entirety of game one, and he played very well. He made 25 saves, and allowed just a pair of even strength goals.
I didn’t catch all of this game on LiveBarn because I had ventured outdoors to get some yard and wood work done. When I did tune in, I thought the Flames looked a little sluggish, but not bad. Providence dominated the first period in shots, 11-3, but the score was tied 1-1, after one.
The 2010 Flames played a stronger second period, but allowed the only goal of the period. In the end, the Flames dropped the contest, 3-1. Providence did end up with a 28-25 advantage in shots over the course of the game. Each team was whistled for six penalties, and Providence scored the only power play goal of the game.
- Flames scored first – St. Pierre got a passing poke in with his stick to break up a play at center ice. The puck slid toward Beal who was skating backward. Beal was setting up to make a pass to Warren as he was tripped from behind. Beal fell, but the puck made it to Warren who shot from out high between the circles. The shot trickled through the goalie and into the net. Warren from Beal and St. Pierre. 1-0.

Game three of the RI Road Trip was back at Lynch Arena. It was a rematch of the morning game against Providence Hockey Club (South). For game two of the doubleheader, Ingalls played the entirety of the game with a whopping 40 saves.
I thought the Flames skated really well in the opening period, and they were tied, 1-1 after one. RI had 9 shots on goal, while the 2010 Flames had 8. Then from there, it seemed as though the Flames ran out of gas as far as chances went. In other words, their remaining opportunities took on a weight of four-fold. They were outshot for the rest of the game, 33-9. They had chances but they didn’t always materialize into shots on goal, or shots at all.
This 2010 Flames team has been missing two forwards for several weeks due to health related issues. Then, for the RI road trip, two of their top goal scorers didn’t even make the trip due to sickness and injury. No excuses made, nor asked for. Nothing left on the ice in RI. The team played very hard, and there may be more injuries to the team from leaving everything they had on the ice in RI.
- Flames goal – Soucy took the puck off of the huge defenseman along the boards and beat it for the corner. As he turned the corner he fed a beautiful pass to the slot for Beal. Beal was there and ready, and he buried the shot before the goalie could slide side to side. Great pass play. Beal from Soucy. 1-1.

Countless hours of my life have been spent in the tracking of numbers while loving the sports and players that produce them.
