December 23, 2023 – Nothing Up North – Berlin, NH – Conway, NH
It seems that the 2010 Flames team has not been whole for weeks and weeks now. With 2 t0 7 players missing from the lineup in any given game since early November, the wear and tear has taken a toll. The trip on the Saturday before Christmas left them with nothing up north.
With my son on the injured list (along with several others) and our household experiencing varying levels of sickness, I, we, did not travel to northern NH for the two games on Saturday. I love going to Berlin and Conway, it is a beautiful part of the Granite State. Of course, I love to watch the kids play, too. Honestly, I just can’t wait for our team to be whole and healthy again, hopefully soon.
As far as wins, or points the 2010 Flames came away with nothing up north. But there were plays, shots, goals, and much more. I am sorry to say that the box score entries from the rink as relayed by the officials on the ice are not even close to accurate as far as the Flames scoring plays are concerned. I didn’t check the Berlin details from the video.
The Flames piled up 35 shots on goal, while Berlin had 29. The Sabres did score an empty net goal at the end. Rosenbeck and Ingalls split the duties in net for the Flames.
The descriptions below are from watching the video over and over, to get things right.
- Flames first goal – Warren won a puck battle in one corner of the defensive zone and he wrapped the puck hard around the end boards to the other side. That is where Hawkes grabbed the puck and headed up the ice. Hawkes hit the afterburners with Giampa on his left. Hawkes skated in close and fired a shot that beat the goaltender for the goal. Hawkes from Warren. 1-0.
- Flames goal, trailing, 5-1 – The Flames carried the puck into the zone and Powers took a long shot on net that was stick saved to the end boards. The puck was sent along the boards where Petrie picked it up and centered a pass that Mooney tipped at the side of the net. But the puck squirted away, to the low slot, where Powers had set up. Powers slapped the puck into the net for the goal. Powers from Mooney and Petrie. 2-5.
- Similar to the first goal – With the puck in the Flames defensive zone, the puck was played to the end boards. Petrie grabbed the loose puck and sent it up the right wing boards. Hawkes was there, grabbed the puck and bounced it off the half wall to himself to get around a defender. Hawkes hit the gas again, this time with Warren on his left. Hawkes was flying as he skated in close and got a nice shot past the goaltender. Hawkes from Petrie. 3-5.

After a loss up in Berlin, the Flames had a few hours to rest up, eat, and get down to Conway for game two of the day.
With 11 skaters and 2 goalies, the visitors put up a great effort. The Flames had 35 shots on goal, while Mt. Washington had 27. Rosenbeck and Ingalls split the duties in net for the Flames.
The descriptions below are from watching the video.
- Flames first goal – Giampa won an offensive zone faceoff thanks to Warren stepping into grab the puck and push a pass to Booth at the blue line. Booth was pestered by an Eagle but he fought to get a shot on net. The shot was saved but the puck was loose and Powers was right there to poke the puck in. Powers from Booth and Warren. 1-2.
- Flames goal, trailing, 4-1 – The Flames had the puck then lost the puck. Then they forechecked to keep the puck in the zone, but nothing was bouncing their way. Then Lazzaro pinched down the wall and stole the puck from the Eagles tandem trying to break it out. Lazzaro danced through, one, two, three defenders and closed in on the net. He shot and scored the Flames goal of the game. Lazzaro unassisted. 2-4.

The 2010 Flames made the trip, played hard, and came away with nothing up north. Honestly though, to see this team play shorthanded and in different positions game after game is tough on the team. They are playing hard and doing a lot of things well. But you can tell that things are just out of sync with so many players out of the lineup game after game. I love the effort though. Keep working, eventually the 2010 Flames will be whole again.
Countless hours of my life have been spent in the tracking of numbers while loving the sports and players that produce them.
