February 03-04, 2024 – Til The End – West Side Arena – Cranston Veterans Memorial –
On Saturday, the 2010 Flames lost 3-0 in a game where they piled up 39 shots on goal. Sunday, in Rhode Island, they were down 2-0 in the second period. Somehow they kept plugging away, and tied the game going to the 3rd, 2-2. Then with 3 minutes left to play they scored, and won the game, 3-2. This team, they just kept giving their best effort, right til the end. This is truly one of the aspects of this team that I enjoy the most.
On Saturday, the Flames were shutout for just the third time this season. Two of those shutouts have been against the Boch Blazers. The Flames piled up 39 shots on goal, but they just didn’t have the clean plays to get to the shots. A shot with a rebound would be cleared by the defense. Then when the Flames had a net presence the shots were blocked or off the mark. This of course, has a lot to do with the defense of the Blazers.
This was one of those games when I walked away thinking that each of the goaltenders in the game played very well. Four goaltenders played, and they faced roughly 70 shots combined, and only two goals got past them. Boch’s 3rd goal was on an empty net.

On Sunday, the Flames traveled to Rhode Island and played at Cranston Veterans Memorial Ice. The 2010 Flames fell behind, 1-0. Then, 2-0. But they just kept coming at their opponents. Eventually, the Flames came all the way back and scored in the final minutes to clinch a very gratifying win, 3-2. It was the Flames first win in the Fed since December 2nd, a span of 63 days.
The key factors in this game, to me, were the team’s complete effort right til the end. And, the Ingalls and Rosenbeck tandem was downright outstanding in net. I do love this team. I love their effort. The more they play together, the better they are.
Here is a breakdown of the three Flames goals. I took these highlights from video (yes, LiveBarn) because I was locked in my house and not allowed to make this trip. Actually, I was home, watching video of hockey. I was writing to others, about hockey. I was updating spreadsheets with hockey numbers, also known as stats. Then, I was writing stories that recap what the kids do while playing games on sheets of ice, all over the place.
- 2010 Flames get in the board and cut into the deficit – The Flames had the puck in the offensive zone and were trying to get something going in their favor. Then, Giampa fired a long shot, but a good shot on net. The rebound was kicked to the corner where Drumm grabbed it and took a look around. He saw Powers in the high slot and made a great pass to him. Powers stepped into his shot and hit the back of the net with the puck, for the goal. Powers from Drumm and Giampa. 1-2.
- Flames tie the game, 2-2 on the power play – Powers moved the puck quickly in the defensive zone, over to Lazzaro on the left. Lazzaro carried the puck with Ouellette and Hawkes ahead of him at the offensive blue line. Lazzaro’s bid was broken up by the defense but the clearing attempt went right to Powers who was trailing the play. Powers let a quick, low shot go, and it found the space between the goalie’s skate and the inside of the post. PPG – Powers unassisted. 2-2.
- The Flames seal the deal – With Powers and Lazzaro back on D, the Providence team was mounting a rush on offense. Powers and Lazzaro both swiped their sticks at the onrushing opponent but that didn’t do much. Then Lazzaro stepped into the offender and broke up the play. Not only did he break up the play, he came away with the puck. At that very moment as Providence was still skating into the zone on the offensive, the play had changed, and now Lazzaro had the puck and was heading in the opposite direction. Lazzaro led the pack, with Mooney on his right in a 2-on-0 that might have been rounded up to a 2-on-1 if depending on what team you wanted to root for. Anyways, Lazzaro was in front, and as he approached the net with great speed, he flipped a perfect shot up over the shoulder, into the top corner of the net. Great play! The teammates on the ice mobbed him and each other, and the Flames had the lead! Lazzaro unassisted. 3-2. GWG.

Countless hours of my life have been spent in the tracking of numbers while loving the sports and players that produce them.
