– One Line – Goffstown Hockey –
– Goffstown at Nashua North-Souhegan – Conway Arena – Nashua, NH –
While the state of Massachusetts was migrating up Route 3 to NH for their school vacation week, the Goffstown hockey team made another trip to Nashua’s Conway Arena. This time they played an afternoon game against the Saber-Titans. The home team won it, 2-1 in OT.
As I left the rink yesterday I wasn’t sure how I was going to recap this game. As I type now, I am still not sure.I will say this though. When I finally left the rink, I drove north to get home. And, I was in one line, one long line of traffic traveling north.
But the game. Hmmm. How about this. Goffstown stormed out of the gate and posted 17 shots on goal in the first period. They only had 15 more shots on goal for the rest of the game. Nobody scored in the first period, but I did mark a star on one save by Kyle Bennett. Then a Saber-Titan player rang a shot off of the post in the final 20 seconds of the period.
In the second period, one line put a rush together and scored. That was after a chip out of the zone by Jake Dodge, when the puck bounced past Austin Campbell at the blue line. Chase Mcbride carried the puck up the right side and fed a pass to Jacob Landry in the slot for the score. 1-0.
A few minutes later, Tyler Lessard blocked a shot while killing a penalty and earned himself a breakaway bid. With a fair amount of net to shoot at, his shot hit the post and bounced back to where it had come from, harmlessly away.
There were six penalties called in the second period, and probably a handful more that weren’t called.
In the third period, the Goffstown hockey squad was called for 3 of the 4 penalties in the period. They were also outshot, 13-6 in the period, but they scored the only goal.
I am not terribly liberal with my ‘stars’ system, but I had Bennett with a 2-1 ‘stars’ lead over Zachary Veilleux in the 3rd period.
In the overtime, the Grizzlies were outshot 6-1. And that all happened in 93 seconds.
Mcbride scored the game winner, coming from behind the net on a wraparound of sorts. Bennett had been pushed back into his net a bit, and he was unable to cut off the angle at the post to make the save.
If I were allowed one line that sums up the gnawing, never-ending thought pattern that troubles me at the very core of my innermost moral computer, which works continuously to balance something close to this equation: ((right vs. wrong) = truth) – the factor of human error = 1 (which stands for getting 1 out of every 1 things right). OF COURSE, this is faulty because we are all human, and inherently we err.
My one line:
I am frustrated at the fact that from one shift, one period, one game, or one day to another, on a symmetrical sheet of frozen water, the enforcing of clearly defined rules, is not only asymmetrical, it is as inconsistent as the weather.
Here is how the Goffstown hockey team scored their goal.
- Goffstown got on the board, 40 minutes and 20 seconds into the game. The Grizzlies won an offensive zone face-off that went from Zack Tarrier to Sam Chapman out to the point to AJ Hill. Hill ripped a shot through traffic that was turned away but the puck was controlled by Chapman and Tarrier. Ultimately, Tarrier hit Chapman with a little pass that set Chapman up for a shot. He fired in close and Veilleux made the save. This time Chapman got his own rebound put the puck into the net for the goal. S. Chapman (10) Tarrier (15) and Hill (3) and . 1-1.
Veilleux and Bennett, the goalies, were both fantastic all day long.

Remembering Jen Cheney…
The Jen Cheney Memorial Scholarship and Sportsmanship Award (awarded each season)
As a sixteen-year-old junior, Jen was a manager for the very first Goffstown Grizzlies hockey team in the 1999-2000 club season. Her infectious smile and friendly nature was a joy for everyone fortunate to know her. Jen is now our eternal team angel. The spirit of Jen lives on…our team champions an angel memorial patch sewn to each uniform jersey.
On Thursday, May 18th, 2000, Jen was killed by a drunk driver. We are dedicated to memorialize Jen’s life with the Jen Cheney Memorial Scholarship and Sportsmanship Award. But we also want to deliver a message from our team angel… simply…if you choose to drink, don’t drive.
