October 5 & 6, 2024 – 2010 Flames Play Three –
Our family was up in the Sunapee-Kearsarge Region of NH for the weekend. It was a wedding weekend at Ragged Mountain Resort for us. Meanwhile the 2010 Flames played three games.
With some injuries and other commitments, the 2010 Flames didn’t skate their full available roster for any of the games over the weekend.
Our family was fortunate enough to be together for our oldest son’s wedding. It was a beautiful ceremony in a beautiful place. It was a spectacular weekend.
Either way, I heard from several folks that the Flames just didn’t show up to play in the first game of the weekend at Merrimack College. It happens.
On Sunday morning at Tilton School, the Flames came to play and played very well. I heard from a local hockey star that he was “very impressed with how well the Flames played”. And, “especially how well they passed the puck”.
Sunday evening the Flames returned to West Side Arena where the game played out like an old WWF Main Event. You know where the road team are villains and somehow still win. Which of course sets up another ‘must see’ rematch down the road.

Game 9.
West Side Arena
- 2010 Flames: 01 – 01 – 01 = 03
- Cyclones Academy 14U T2, etc.: 02 – 00 – 02 = 04
There were 26 penalties called in this game. 18 of those were against the Cyclones, which included 3 disqualifications, and a coach suspended for one game. There were moments of what looked like, well, madness.
The Flames were trailing 1-0 when Booth made a nice stick check back in the D zone, in doing so, he swatted the puck to the wall. Soucy had a head of steam and grabbed the puck on the way out of the zone. At center ice Soucy narrowly dodged a hit from a large player trying to line him up. He broke into the offensive zone, tipped the puck past a defender, and ripped a shot into the net. Great play! Soucy from Booth – Even.
In the second period, the Flames trailed by a goal again. And again, they tied the score. The Flames had one of several 5-on-3 Power Plays in the game, and on this one, they scored. After some passing, a shot through traffic, and a bouncing puck, Powers settled the puck. He made a nice pass to Booth for a shot that sailed just over the bar.
Destani ran down the rebound and calmly surveyed the situation. As he pivoted with the puck beyond the top of the left wing circle he made a nice pass to Soucy on the right wing dot. Soucy took an abbreviated slapshot along the ice. Mooney was on the doorstep and the puck hit directly off the blade of his stick and caromed wide of the net. The puck slid just outside the crease where Destani alertly slapped the puck into the open side of the net.
Great passing and puck movement led to the power play goal. 50n3 – PPG – Destani from Mooney and Soucy. All five skaters touched the puck in succession.
The took a 4-2 lead in the final period. But the 2010 Flames continued to get chances and play hard. The puck was loose at center ice and the Flames were on the power play. Giampa tipped the puck into the neutral zone and then Destani had a touch on the puck, but neither could carry it. Then Booth came flying up the wall and grabbed the puck on his way toward the offensive zone.
Booth got outside, and scampered up the right wing. As closed on the net with speed, he ripped a shot that found the strings. The shot flew between the goalie’s glove and the post for the power play goal. PPG – Booth from Destani and Giampa.
The Flames pulled Rosenbeck with about 40 seconds left for an extra attacker, but the Flames were unable to tie the score.
Penalties:
- Giampa – Checking from Behind.
- Giampa – Misconduct. (8 minutes)
- Soucy – Tripping. (Power play goal against)
- Drumm – Tripping.
- Booth – Hook.
- Powers – Tripping.
- Destani – Tripping.
- Destani – Slashing. (Power play goal against)
Mooney’s Moonshots
So this is why I call these Mooney’s Moonshots. Well, the name Mooney, that already gets us headed in the right direction. Then there is this. Moonshot. While ‘moonshot’ originally meant “long shot,” it’s increasingly being used to describe a monumental effort and a lofty goal—in other words, a “giant leap.” Moonshot is also used to describe a towering home run. And home run is a large gain, or popular success. So ya, I like Mooney’s Moonshots because it stands for all of that.
