Back To Back Blanks – February 03, 2025
The defense clogged the middle and blocked several shots. Mason Ballard didn’t skate as freely as he had four weeks earlier. Bennett made 25 saves and the offense came to life on the power play.

The Goffstown Grizzlies Hockey team played the first of four straight home games on Monday night, and they got an important win, 5-0. The first period was scoreless despite two power plays for the Raiders, and 12 shots on goal for the Grizzlies. There were four penalties called in the opening period. One of these penalties had an impact on the rest of the game.
Keegan Dannehy was called for a major penalty, hitting from behind. The penalty carried a game misconduct with it and Dannehy was done for the night at 12:10 0f the 1st period. Owen St. Onge was the recipient of the hit and missed a number of shifts during the game. He had at least a chipped tooth and lacerated lip from the hit. St. Onge would score a goal later in the game.
This wasn’t a blowout at all. For example, the Grizzlies hockey team jumped out to a 3 goal lead after scoring three times in 5:24 during the second period. Then, they promptly took 3 penalties in 3:37 of the same period. They killed off the first 34 seconds of one penalty, then 1:26 of a 5-on-3 deficit. A minute and three seconds later, they took another minor penalty. They killed the penalties as Kyle Bennett was their best penalty killer all night.
In other words, the three goal advantage didn’t feel all that safe with all the penalties and opportunities allowed the Raiders. In the final period, the Lessard’s connected for an end to end play that gave the Grizzlies a 4-0 lead. Kyle Bennett made 19 saves on 19 shots over the final two periods, and Tyler Lessard added an unassisted goal half way through the third period to seal the 5-0 win.
Goffstown will play host to D1 Nashua South-Pelham on Wednesday, February 5th.

- LSM Raiders – Evan George made 28 saves on 33 shots (.848).
The Goffstown Grizzlies Hockey team was held scoreless in the first period. They broke through with three goals in the second period, including a pair on the power play.
- 2nd 1:51 – Power play – Sam Chapman and Zack Tarrier were battling for puck possession in front of the net. Sam was able to tip the puck clear of the fray over to Tarrier along the half wall. Tarrier fed a pass back to Brock Bennett at the point. Bennett moonwalked the blue line while dragging the puck on his forehand. Then he fired through traffic. The shot was saved by Evan George but there was a rebound. On the far post, at the edge of the doorstep, was Tyler Lessard. Lessard smacked the rebound into the net for the Grizzlies power play goal. PPG – T. Lessard (16) from B. Bennett (8) and Tarrier (10). GWG. 1-0.
- 2nd 4:41 – Power play – The Grizzlies had connected on several good passes during the power play, but nothing had come together to produce a goal. Then, AJ Hill’s backdoor pass just missed Cooper Chapman. But Chapman grabbed the puck out of the corner and stepped toward the middle. He dropped a pass low to Connor Bernard below the goal line but it was tipped. Bernard got the puck and skated to the circle as Cooper dropped below the goal line, essentially swapping places on the ice. Bernard dropped a pass to Cooper and retreated from the space giving Cooper a lot of room to operate. Cooper stepped up toward the crease and tried to jam the puck in a wrap around attempt minus the wrap. The puck squirted off of Evan George’s pads and through the crease to the far post. This is where Gavin Diodati was strong on his stick and quickly won the puck from prying blades and slipped the puck past George into the net. Nice digging. PPG – Diodati (3) from C. Chapman (16) and Bernard (3). 2-0.
- 2nd 7:15 – Another goal in the digging category. The Raiders were challenging the Grizzlies everywhere on the ice. But the Grizzlies had a half step lead most of the night. Goffstown worked the puck from the D zone to the offensive zone but nothing was clean or easy. But little battles were being won. Owen St. Onge disrupted a clearing attempt by the Raiders which allowed Cooper Chapman to keep the puck in the zone and spin for a shot out high. He got a lot on the shot. He used a defender as a screen but Evan George made the initial save. George had come way out to cut the angle and had a teammate and two Grizzlies behind him in the crease. The shot got through George and Sam Chapman kept the puck alive by swatting at it with the Raider defender battling also. All behind George in the crease. The puck was loose and St. Onge, also in the crease, tapped the puck into the net. Odd arrangement but a good goal. Even – St. Onge (3) from S. Chapman (8) and C. Chapman (17). 3-0.
- 3rd 1:49 – Lessard to Lessard. Montana Ballard squeezed a shot past Kyle Bennett in net for the Grizzlies. The puck hit iron and caromed out from behind Bennett. Zach Lessard picked up the puck and turned up ice. He spotted his older brother, Tyler Lessard ahead of him and hit him with a pass. Tyler sped up the left side to the outside and turned the corner. Before the D could close on him he slid a quick shot through the five hole for the goal. Even – T. Lessard (17) from Z. Lessard (3) and the post. 4-0.

- 3rd 7:01 – After unsuccessful dumps and clears by both teams in a stretch of back and forth, a turnover led to a goal. The Raiders cleared the puck out of their defensive end, throwing it through center ice toward the other end. Tyler Lessard picked up the puck back by the defensive blue line, and he was already facing up ice. He took the puck with speed up through center ice and over the offensive blue line. His path and speed led him to the right wing face-off dot where he ripped a shot inside the far side post for his third goal of the game. Even – T. Lessard (18) unassisted. 5-0.

Remembering Jen Cheney…
The Jen Cheney Memorial Scholarship and Sportsmanship Award (awarded each season)
As a sixteen-year-old junior, Jen was a manager for the very first Goffstown Grizzlies hockey team in the 1999-2000 club season. Her infectious smile and friendly nature was a joy for everyone fortunate to know her. Jen is now our eternal team angel. The spirit of Jen lives on…our team champions an angel memorial patch sewn to each uniform jersey.
On Thursday, May 18th, 2000, Jen was killed by a drunk driver. We are dedicated to memorialize Jen’s life with the Jen Cheney Memorial Scholarship and Sportsmanship Award. But we also want to deliver a message from our team angel… simply…if you choose to drink, don’t drive.

Either way I agree with this statement from a great hockey coach, “It’s a great day for hockey” ~ the late “Badger” Bob Johnson.
“We should be dreaming. We grew up as kids having dreams, but now we’re too sophisticated as adults, as a nation. We stopped dreaming. We should always have dreams.” ~ the late Herb Brooks.
“To me, there are three things we all should do every day. We should do this every day of our lives. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. Number three is, you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it: If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that’s a full day. That’s a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you’re going to have something special.” ~ the late Jim Valvano on how to live life, during his ESPY speech.
