After a sobering loss in the morning to the Wachusett Wolfpack, the Flames had to rebound for a game against the first place team in their Granite State division.
So the scene shifted from JFK to the West Side for an afternoon battle on the ice sheet against the Lakes Region Lakers. The game was scoreless for more than two and a half periods but it didn’t lack excitement. Both teams played well. Both goaltenders played exceptionally well. At some point though, something had to give. Finally the Flames broke through and ended up scoring three goals in the last 5 minutes to win the game, 3-0.
Enjoy some pictures and commentary from the afternoon game at West Side Arena.
- Logan’s parents went to school in Florida, which is the only way I can explain him swimming through the slot to attempt a shot on goal.
- Teddy looks to start a rush up ice with Austin and Finley.
- The rush led to this shot from Teddy that was barely deflected by the Lakes Region goaltender.
- In this day and age I find that other people and their agendas are more important than mine.
- Ian picked his spot on this shot and just missed wide with his attempt.
- Austin was challenged on this shot that was saved by the goalie for Lakes Region.
- Garrett and Jax look at the ref to let him know that he made the right call.
- A rare moment in hockey when the letters JKL appear in order, Jax, Kaveney, and Logan. If you take the “I” from Ian, and “M” from McCain, you get I,J,K,L,M but that’s just too much to handle.
- Ron Brenner played goal for the Flames on Saturday afternoon, and he was outstanding! By request of his agent we only show his skills in this picture (he’s a free agent this season).
- The sign says snow and ice. The dry erase board looks like someone diagrammed their Thanksgiving turkey, and the Lakers bench is very much focused on the game. Somehow Colby is skating in his sleep.
- I am partial to the Flames but I appreciate good hockey play. The goalie for Lakes Region was fantastic and very difficult to beat.
- Jordan fires a shot towards the net at West Side Arena.
- Logan says, “Hey! Look at that wide open 5-hole!”
- Lakers goalie says, “Closing time. No goal for you!”
- After two scoreless periods, Coach Nick pulled the team together for a rousing speech.
- Ian practices hopping on one leg while Colby thinks, “I’m a defenseman, why are you behind me?”
- Colby tries to defend while Ron gets ready to take it from here.
- Ron gets just enough of the puck to keep it wide of the far post.
- Kaveney the Magnificent unveils his latest illusion as he attempts to score through the back of the net. Perfect execution.
- In a planking maneuver gone wrong, James can only watch as Ron tips the puck with his glove and saves a goal.
- Austin almost sliced a defender in half with this move, but also sent a 3.5 MPH pass towards Logan.
- Austin gets full style points in finishing his move while Logan seizes up this chance. Nothing came of this but it looked promising.
- Then Austin got free again.
- This time he got a puck past the awesome Laker goalie. Flames led 1-0 with 4:48 to play.
- Garrett fires a shot and freezes two Lakers players with the blast.
- Ron makes yet another save for the Flames.
- Here Ron dives to his left and forces this shot to the outside of the net.
- With 2:09 to play, Austin squeezed the puck past the goaltender for a 2-0 lead.
- The puck is just beyond the goaltender’s reach and headed for the back of the net.
- Lakes Region kept competing, right to the end of the game. Ron holds down the fort one more time.
