Healing Through Writing – Generation Jumping

Thank you to Nicola for putting together a really nice piece on her site. She really did a great job. She is far better at writing than I am. It is humbling, yet I am extremely grateful to have her support/collaboration within the space of Healing Through Writing.

The interview with Nicola was thought provoking, which I always find to be a great exercise. Looking at things from multiple perspectives even when you think you know a subject inside and out is still a good practice.

What For? Favorite Part? Why?

My ‘what for?’ is two-fold. First, to point people toward God, our Creator. Through stories of ordinary people living extraordinary lives through faith, serving others, and exiting this world with peace and eternal hope.

Second, what started as notes and communications over a period of many years became a rush to share a legacy memoir of sorts. While we live we are constantly capturing memories. Many of those memories come from spending time with generations before, and after us. Loss, lots of it, prompted an urgency in me to share legacy. To share stories, beautiful and powerful stories, that are both simple and authentically raw.

Favorite Part?

For my book, the Prologue is probably my favorite part. In a book that is full of stories of my favorite people, going back to the days of my youth was a lot of fun. Partly because of how those days were so full of fun, freedom, and a family full of love. Also because my grandmother’s funeral was a real life example of what loving and serving our Savior really looks like. Joy separating moments of pain and grief. A hope that redeems grief. The call to carry these things forward through a lens of love and respect while being humbled before our Lord.

Why? For My Dad Among Others

In truth, the line that I told myself, my wife, and my closest circle of friends who knew about this project went something like this. We live in a world full of swirling stories that aren’t true, don’t matter, or are just flat depressing. So, I wanted to add some really good, true, authentic stories to the mix. True stories about people I love. People who served the Lord for the majority of their lives, and anyone who knew them, knew exactly that.
