The month of January saw hockey games rescheduled because of illnesses and also because of weather. Overall, the 2010 Flames played 9 games (lowest amount since 9 games in September) in January, and they had a record of 4-4-1.

This is my favorite stat of the entire season. Because this statistic is all about team.

Over the course of this season, 12 of our rostered 15 skaters have not only scored 10 or more goals, but they also have recorded 10 or more assists.

The other stat that I love about our ‘team first’ mantra is that our two goaltenders have backstopped this team for 53 games (thru January) and they have allowed 58 and 57 goals respectively.

This team gets sizeable contributions from every single player on the team and the numbers back that up. Numbers don’t capture personality and playing styles, nor do they capture heart and effort. If they did, I would guarantee the stats for those things would be off the charts, and I would absolutely celebrate them.

Moving the puck, making good hockey plays, hustling to fill a lane or to get back on D, having each other’s backs, and playing as hard as possible until the final whistle, that is us, the 2010 Flames. We could be the 1 team, the 2 team, the 44 team, I would take this team every single time.

January, 2024

• Total games played in January: 9.
• Overall record: 4-4-1.
• Home games in January: 6 (5 home games at West Side Arena, and 1 home game at JFK Coliseum).
• Record at home: 2-3-1.
• Total Goals for: 41.
• Total Goals against: 23.
• Goals by period GF/GA: 1st – 19/6. 2nd – 11/8. 3rd – 11/9.
• Losses and Margin: 4 Losses, all by one goal. Lost 4-3, three times. Lost 3-2 once.
• Wins and Margin: 4 Wins. Outscored opponents, 29-7.
• PIM: 76 Minutes in Penalties, or 8.44 minutes per game, down from 11 minutes per game in December.
• Goals scored per game: 4.56. Way up from December.
• Goals allowed per game: 2.56. Slightly higher than December.
• Assists per game: 5.89. Way up from December.

If any of our players have been getting compliments from the coaching staff, maybe it’s because they have noticed positive changes in their game.

 

Countless hours of my life have been spent in the tracking of numbers while loving the sports and players that produce them.
