The end of a matter is better than its beginning;
likewise, patience is better than pride.

Shootout at the JFK Corral
Final bracket of the Brian C. Stone Memorial Christmas Tournament.

December 28 –

The Manchester Kings completely smoked the Goffstown Grizzlies Hockey team 13 days earlier. They thrashed the Grizzlies, 6-0 at the same JFK Corral in the season opener. In the Brian C. Stone Memorial Christmas Tournament things were much different. Manchester had half their team and their head coach at a JV game. I hope that was good for the tournament fund raising initiative.

The Goffstown Grizzlies Hockey team took a 10-9 advantage in shots on goal to the first intermission. That was it. No scoring. No penalties called. Just good hockey with both teams doing everything they could to keep scoring opportunities to a minimum.

In the second period, Goffstown freshman, Corey Beland, buried his second career goal on a sprint up the left wing. Connor Bernard got the puck to Cam Desruisseaux in the D zone and he slipped a quick pass to Beland. He carried the puck into the offensive zone with a guy all over him and drilled a shot just inside the post and crossbar. Cam Fratus was crashing the net from the right side as the puck found the back of the net.

It was almost half way through the third period before Manchester got on the board, but they did. Jackson Horne was called for a penalty and the Kings scored 5 seconds later. The Manchester Kings won the offensive zone face-off. Jonny Nassoura won the draw against freshman, Van Eames. Andrue McLaughlin pushed the puck back to the left point where Frank Tessier was stationed. Tessier walked the blue line and fired a shot through traffic. The puck found daylight and squeezed through the pads of Jake O’Neil for the tying goal with 8:58 left to play.

After three periods, the game was tied, 1-1. The three-minute overtime yielded no goals. It was time for another shootout at the JFK Corral.

Shootout: Goffstown (St. Onge) score! Manchester denied. Goffstown stopped. Manchester (Cantin) score! Goffstown (Tarrier) Game-winning goal! Manchester no goal. Grizzlies win it!

Games five, six, and seven are on the three days following Christmas. The Goffstown Grizzlies Hockey team will play in the Brian C. Stone Memorial Christmas Tournament again this year. All games are played at JFK Memorial Coliseum in Manchester, NH.

Remembering Jen Cheney…

The Jen Cheney Memorial Scholarship and Sportsmanship Award (awarded each season)

(Photo © by 1inawesomewonder 2025).

As a sixteen-year-old junior, Jen was a manager for the very first Goffstown Grizzlies hockey team in the 1999-2000 club season. Her infectious smile and friendly nature was a joy for everyone fortunate to know her. Jen is now our eternal team angel. The spirit of Jen lives on…our team champions an angel memorial patch sewn to each uniform jersey.

On Thursday, May 18th, 2000, Jen was killed by a drunk driver. We are dedicated to memorialize Jen’s life with the Jen Cheney Memorial Scholarship and Sportsmanship Award. But we also want to deliver a message from our team angel… simply…if you choose to drink, don’t drive.

The thoughts and opinions expressed here are those of the individual contributors, mostly mine. They do not necessarily reflect the views of the leagues, schools, coaches, players, or characters listed in any of these blog posts. Or, maybe they do. Either way, you would have to ask them directly.

Either way I agree with this statement from a great hockey coach, “It’s a great day for hockey” ~ the late “Badger” Bob Johnson.

“We should be dreaming. We grew up as kids having dreams, but now we’re too sophisticated as adults, as a nation. We stopped dreaming. We should always have dreams.” ~ the late Herb Brooks.

“To me, there are three things we all should do every day. We should do this every day of our lives. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. Number three is, you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it: If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that’s a full day. That’s a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you’re going to have something special.” ~ the late Jim Valvano on how to live life, during his ESPY speech.

“I started writing sports stories 20 years ago. I still do. I write because somewhere, in some game, a kid might be having the time of his or her life. That’s awesome to think about. It’s all about the kids.” ~ Steve Beal Sr.
