Eric Church’s Guitar Metaphor
When Eric Church stood before the UNC Chapel Hill Class of 2026, he used simple imagery: six strings on a guitar. Each string representing a different lesson about life, faith, and purpose.
But what caught my ear wasn’t just the metaphor. It was the sound underneath it.
The Way – A Manner of Life
Jesus said, “I am the way.” Not a map. Not a set of directions. A manner of living. The way we walk, speak, love, and show up every day. Eric Church picked up a guitar and demonstrated. Six strings, one instrument. That’s intentional living. Not just words, but example. Not just Sunday, but everyday.
The Truth – What Sounds Beautiful
Here’s what Romans 2:15 tells us: God’s truth is written on our hearts. We know the difference between a beautiful sound and something out of tune. We know it instinctively because that’s how we’re created. Truth isn’t hidden – it’s what remains when illusion, deceit, and error are stripped away. Like a guitar in perfect tune, you don’t have to convince anyone it’s in tune. They hear it.
The Life – Unbroken Fellowship
Adam and Eve walked with God in the garden. Unbroken fellowship. That’s the life Jesus offers in John 10:10. We were not created and put here just for survival, but abundance. The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy. Jesus comes to bring life.
Six strings. One guitar. One truth.
The question isn’t whether we can hear the difference between harmony and dissonance. The question is whether we’re willing to tune our lives to the One who is the way, the truth, and the life.
